Luca Parmitano is an Italian astronaut of the European Space Agency (ESA), just returned to Earth after a long mission to the International Space Station (ISS).
His mission was called Volare and he stayed in space for 166 days, from May to November 2013. On 9 July at 14.15 p.m. he was the first Italian astronaut to perform a spacewalk outside the ISS.
During the same mission he performed also a second spacewalk, that turned-out to be a very dangerous one because of serious technical problems, but Luca managed to remain calm, returning safely to inside the ISS.
On 20 February 2014, Parmitano was invited as a guest at Sanremo, the famous Italian music festival. He was interviewed by Fabio Fazio, the festival’s showman, and answered to a few questions related to his life in space. “If we observe the Earth from space there are no limits”, said Parmitano, “since I was a child, I was animated by Ulysses’ gene. That gene drives you to go beyond your limits”.
Fabio Fazio asked him to describe how our planet looks from space, but Parmitano explained: “I don’t have the words to describe how Earth looks like from space. To describe that properly you need a poet”.
Every day the International Space Station (ISS) orbits 16 times around Earth: “16 sunrises and 16 sunsets like Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s Little Prince”, observed jokingly Parmitano.
We can see the ISS from Earth: there are websites to track its position in the sky. (If you are interested, check ESA’s website). Parmitano had the possibility to phone his mother while the ISS was passing above Sicily, and his mother was able to see that brightest point, aware that it was the trace of Luca’s extraordinary ride in the sky.
During his participation at Sanremo Festival, the Italian astronaut read a very beautiful and touching letter, written by him. We can report it as follows: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever (this is a line written by the great romantic poet John Keats, and I apologise with him for my literary inadequacy). When I was up there on the space station, I thought that if Beauty is in the eyes of who observes, my eyes will never be able to contain Earth’s Beauty as I could see it from the ISS’ Cupola.

I tried to fill my eyes of what I was watching in order to transform it in indelible memories. I wouldn’t want to forget anything of what I was seeing. What I was observing was so immense, incredible and different from my earth life that I was worried to forget something or remember just a little part of the whole. In those moments I understood that the Beauty is not just visible. The sensation of a light ray’s warmness, which passed through one of the Cupola’s seven windows and cleared up my face, had the same primordial intensity of my daughter’s green eyes in which I get lost when she looks at me and brushes my cheek with her little fingers.
The incompressible Beauty of absolute Silence, which I knew was outside the Cupola, was tempered by the music’s memory, wonderfully human, that every child listens to, while he lets himself be wrapped by the ancient and precious sound of his mother’s song, who accompanies his son to sleep. A thing of beauty is a joy forever”.

L’ASTRONAUTA DELL’ESA LUCA PARMITANO E L’INDESCRIVIBILE BELLEZZA DELLO SPAZIO
Luca Parmitano è un astronauta italiano dell’Agenzia Spaziale Europea (ESA). È appena tornato sulla Terra dopo aver trascorso 6 mesi sulla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale (ISS) durante la sua missione Volare. È rimasto nello spazio per 166 giorni, da maggio a novembre 2013. Il 9 luglio alle 14.15 è stato il primo astronauta italiano a compiere una passeggiata spaziale fuori dalla Stazione Spaziale Internazionale (ISS).

Durante la stessa missione ha anche effettuato una seconda passeggiata spaziale che si è rivelata essere molto pericolosa a causa di alcuni problemi tecnici, ma Luca ha mantenuto la calma ed è tornato sano e salvo sulla ISS.
Il 20 febbraio 2014, ha partecipato come ospite al Festival di Sanremo. È stato intervistato dal presentatore Fabio Fazio e ha risposto ad alcune domande inerenti la sua vita nello spazio. “Se osserviamo la Terra dallo spazio non ci sono limiti” ha risposto Luca a Fazio, “fin da bambino avevo il Gene di Ulisse. È quel gene che ti spinge ad andare oltre i tuoi limiti”.
Fabio Fazio gli ha chiesto di descrivere come appare il nostro pianeta dallo spazio, ma Parmitano ha spiegato: “Non ho le parole per descrivere come la Terra sembri dallo spazio. Ci sarebbe bisogno di un poeta”.
Ogni giorno la ISS orbita 16 volte: “16 albe e 16 tramonti come Il Piccolo Principe di Antoine de Saint-Exupéry”, ha osservato scherzosamente Luca. La Stazione Spaziale Internazionale può essere vista dalla Terra: ci sono siti che monitorano la posizione della ISS nel cielo. (Se siete interessati visitate il sito dell’ESA). Parmitano ha avuto la possibilità di fare una telefonata a sua madre mentre la ISS stava passando sulla Sicilia e sua madre la osservava consapevole che quel punto luminosissimo era la traccia della corsa straordinariamente di Luca nel cielo.
Durante il suo intervento al Festival di Sanremo, l’astronauta italiano ha letto una sua lettera molto bella e toccante. La riportiamo di seguito: “Una cosa bella è una gioia per sempre (questo è un verso del poeta romantico John Keats a cui chiedo profondamente scusa per la mia inadeguatezza letteraria). Quando ero lassù pensavo: se la bellezza è nello sguardo di chi osserva, allora i miei occhi non potranno mai contenere lo spettacolo che mi si offre attraverso la Cupola della Stazione Spaziale.

Cercavo di riempirmi lo sguardo e di trasformare quello che vedevo in future e indelebili memorie. Avrei voluto non dimenticare nulla, neanche un particolare di quello che stavo vedendo. Quello che stavo osservando era così immenso e così insolito, così diverso da quello che un terrestre è abituato a vedere, che avevo paura di non riuscire a ricordarlo o riuscire a ricordarne solo una piccola parte. Comprendevo lassù che la bellezza non è solo visiva: la sensazione del tepore di un raggio, che attraversava una delle 7 finestre della Cupola per sfiorarmi il volto, aveva la stessa intensità primordiale degli occhi verdi di mia figlia nei quali mi sciolgo perdendomi ogni volta che con la mano mi accarezza la guancia.
La bellezza incomprensibile del silenzio assoluto, che sapevo esistere aldilà della Cupola, si temperava nel ricordo della musica, splendidamente umana, che ogni bambino ascolta mentre si lascia avvolgere dal caldo suono del canto antico, prezioso di una madre, che con la sua voce accompagna il figlio verso il sonno. Una cosa bella è una gioia per sempre”.
